Flimsy Sanity: Wishes and Dreams

Wishes and Dreams

My 80-year old aunt is planning to write her memoirs so she got herself one of those computers and is trying to learn how to use it. Anyway, I picked up a little book for her that is called "All About Me" which is questions to stimulate recollection. In one section, called Wishes and Dreams you are to chose five people you would like to have dinner with. Who would you choose?

I know the first one I would choose would be my sister. I would whine and moan so she would come early and do the cooking. I would peel and chop etc, but I suck as a cook and she is exceptional.

I think I would have my favorite politician, Ralph Nader, Robert Whitaker (who wrote Mad in America and is campaigning for less destructive drugs for the mentally ill), Matt Groening, and some muckraker like Micheal Parenti or Scott Bidstrup (who writes the first blog on my blogroll).

This reminds me of a show Steve Allen produced. Famous people would meet and debate issues.

It just now occurs to me that if this is just a dream, someone else could cook.

Flimsy, inspired by the old Steve Allen show segments (which I adored), for years I have noted down imagined conversations among people I throw together (regardless of whether they actually lived at the same time). Putting Pope, Voltaire, and Matthew Arnold into the same room was, I promise you, quite a trip!

Or Socrates, Spinoza, and Hammurabi? Actually, to reveal a strong personal bias, Spinoza and just about anybody!

Let me know when those memoirs are published! I want a copy!

I think I would rather have dinner with a couple neighbors or maybe just go to the bar and have a couple drinks and get to know them better. It isn't like eating at my house is any treat.

Maybe there was a reason they never tipped the cook!!
