Flimsy, I'd love to attribute it to my own prescient sagacity (a favorite delusion of mine) or my concern for the environment (that's real), but the fact is I was an unsuccessful driver--so bad that after I'd totaled a VW and a Vespa motorscooter, friends wrote urging me not to take up horseback riding! I feel for those who moved to the suburbs to escape inner city conditions (though those might have been bettered had more of them hung around to fight the good fight) and must commute to keep jobs without which they cannot survive. And for some people, I fear what you say isn't really just a wisecrack -- it's probably true: Food or fuel, just as in some cases it's true: Food or medicine.
"Or" just isn't a decent subtitute for "and" in the world's richest nation.
